Juniors should be between 8-17 years.

Each assessment will cost £10 as well as an additional fee to HDRC. Senior Riding 4 Assessment is likely to be in the region of £100 per candidate.

BRC assessments are compatible with the BHS exams. I have said I would be Chef d’Equipe for this. H&DRC have done this before: we had a team in 2003, 2004 and 2005 (if my memory serves me correctly!!) Pictures of us can be seen on the H&DRC Facebook page - this will give you all an idea what it involves. It is great fun but requires a LOT of hard work with training, getting the music together, costumes and making your display theatrical. We were all very lucky that we had a great team working with us doing all the back ground work.

The qualifiers are on the 8th-9th October 2011 at Aintree International Equestrian Centre, Liverpool, L95AS. The championships are held at Olympia in December 2011 - 4 teams will be selected to go through from the qualifiers. If you get through to Olympia it is a requirement that all ponies have a six monthly booster (as per FEI rules)

What is the Quadrille?
The quadrille is a display of horsemanship that tells a story, set to music with a team of 4 riders wearing costume. Good horsemanship in the widest sense, is more important than pure theatre and the widest latitude is allowed in designing the patterns performed. All riders must play an active part but one or two may perform some movements not undertaken by the whole team. The display need not necessarily be based on pure dressage movements. Juniors are now able to compete at Quadrille with immediate effect. A team can be made of all Juniors, a mix of Juniors and Seniors or all Seniors.

There will be 3 selectors at the selection trial, and 3 judges at the final. The three parts are as follows:

Part 1 - Turnout.
A total of 20 marks are available in this section, which covers:

Appearance of the costume

Accuracy of the theme

Fitting of the saddlery

Overall turnout of the horses

Part 2 - Content of the performance.
A total of 40 marks are available in this section, which covers:

The choice and pattern of the movements in the display

The skill and ingenuity with which they are linked

The ability of all the horses to carry out the movements

Freedom and regularity of paces

The standard of riding

Part 3 - General artistic impression.
A total of 40 marks are available in this section, which covers:

The Quadrille as a whole - as a display of horsemanship

The music - Its suitability and fitting to the theme

The entertainment value

Other important information:

The costumes may be modern of period costumes.

The Quadrille must be performed within an Arena of 20m x 60m, and must be designed on the basis that the entrance will be at A.

Only one rider per team my have been placed first, second or third in a Dressage competition held under FEI rules.

The maximum time allowed will be 5 minutes from the form up and salute at the beginning to the finish and salute at the end. Time allowed for the entrance music is 60 seconds, this will be timed from the moment the first horse enters the arena. Music may be played as the team leaves, again 60 seconds.

A script should be written describing the Quadrille, of not more than 100 words.

The music should be suitable for the display - this will be taken into account (see part 3, above). At least one member will need to be a music member of the BD in order for the team to compete. Look for music that will be easily recognised by the audience and music which will get the audience to interact with your performance.

If you would like to read more about Quadrille please follow the link: https://www.bhs.org.uk/Search_Results.aspx?q=quadrille; there you will find videos and pictures from previous competitions.

I will email all interested members - it will be your responsibility to get a team together, you may know each others ponies better than what I do. You also want to ideally be located as locally as possible to each other as you will need to train at least every other week.
